Giovani dos Santos on Mexico coach Tuca Ferretti: We must support him

Mexican midfielder Giovani dos Santos has called on his international teammates to support new El Tri interim coach Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti.

The Tigres boss will take over the national team on an interim basis for up to four games, and Dos Santos believes he will need the backing of the players.

"Well, he's the new coach, and the federation has made that decision," Dos Santos told ESPN FC in an exclusive interview. "He's a good coach and we have to support him. He's got a lot of personality and he's a winner. I'm sure he'll bring good things to the team."

The changes at the national team level since Dos Santos first appeared with the team in 2007 are numerous. Including Hugo Sanchez, the coach who first capped him for the senior team, 10 different coaches have taken charge of El Tri. And Ferretti will be No. 11.

At this point, Dos Santos may be accustomed to the turnover.

"Those of us who have been with the national team are used to this by now and we know now to adapt as quickly as possible to what a new coach wants," said the former Villarreal man. "The good thing is that many of us know each other well and how we play already. We just have to adapt to the new philosophy of the new coach."

Ferretti has only two September friendly matches with which to work with players and impose his approach before Mexico faces off against the United States for a Confederations Cup playoff match in early October.

Dos Santos, however, appeared unfazed by the pressure to get a result with a new coach in charge.

"We're used to it as players, those of us who have been in the national team for a while," he said. "We have to, as rapidly as possible, get used to the coach's new philosophy and to each other. Hopefully, in this short time period, we'll be able to do that."

Some fans have bemoaned the constant turnover of Mexico's coaches as a negative that possibly hurts the quality of the squad and disheartens players.

"As players, we can't really have much opinion on that," Dos Santos observed. "We just have to adapt as much as possible and do our best for the team."

Speaking to reporters earlier on Friday, Dos Santos expressed his belief that no matter who's in charge of the national team, the fight for roster spots will continue.

"It's always competitive, and every year it gets more competitive," the LA Galaxy man said.

While Dos Santos was optimistic about the coaching changes for Mexico, he also expressed confidence that his current form was at a good level in Major League Soccer, where he now plays with the Galaxy.

"I feel good," Dos Santos stated of his form with the Galaxy. " I'm getting to know my teammates, and everything is going well."

The Galaxy have won every match since Dos Santos joined the team and he has scored or had an assist in every game.

"We're motivated, we're doing well," Dos Santos explained. "The team has treated me well, and the fans have been great."
