Jorge Vergara sees no Mexico team return for Ricardo La Volpe

Chivas Guadalajara owner Jorge Vergara said he sees no chance that Argentine Ricardo La Volpe could return to coach the Mexican national team.

"He's not a candidate, it is as simple as that," Vergara told Raza Deportiva on Wednesday. "It is a rumor with zero truthfulness."

As an owner of a Liga MX club, Vergara has a vote in who will succeed Miguel Herrera as El Tri's next head coach. But Vergara is no fan of La Volpe, having fired the current Chiapas coach La Volpe from Chivas in April 2014 for alleged "inappropriate conduct" towards the club's foot hygienist after La Volpe had coached just four matches.

La Volpe claimed in April that the dispute with Chivas had been resolved and that he was free to coach in Mexico again, although details of the resolution were not made public.

"It was an action he committed and he has to pay the price and the consequences," stressed Vergara of La Volpe's alleged sexual harassment.

Chivas club president Nestor de la Torre also backed Vergara, telling ESPN that reinstating Mexico's 2006 World Cup coach La Volpe to the national team would represent a "regression" for El Tri.

La Volpe bit back with venom on Wednesday, following the Chiapas draw against Alebrijes de Oaxaca in the Copa MX.

"Certain people talk of a 'regression," he said. "To those people I say that in four years [in charge of the national team] there was no regression. Look at the qualifying, how we did in the Confederations [Cup], [and how] nine [Mexican] players went to Europe."

"I believe you could say there are others that are better than me, but when you use the word 'regress' you should clean your mouth out," he added.

Herrera was fired on July 29 for throwing a punch at a TV commentator in Philadelphia International Airport, just one day after guiding Mexico to the Gold Cup.

So far there has been no official word from the Mexican federation on potential candidates to replace Herrera.
