Chile federation chief doubts Jorge Sampaoli-to-Mexico reports

Chile Football Federation president Sergio Jadue on Tuesday denied reports out of Mexico that current Chile national team coach Jorge Sampaoli will be taking over at the helm of Mexico's national team.

Jadue dismissed reports that Sampaoli was in conversations with Mexico Football Federation officials to replace dethroned El Tri coach Miguel Herrera.

"No one has called me from Mexico except reporters, so I can't say much about the subject except to say that there is nothing to it," Jadue told AS Chile.

"I know [ex-FMF president] Justino Compean and we are friends. He hasn't called me since we won the Copa America."

Jadue said he expects Sampaoli to play out the contract he has with Chile through the end of the 2018 World Cup. The deal has a reported $12 million release clause.

Mexico's national team director Guillermo Cantu would not confirm or deny that he had met with Sampaoli.

"Mexico now has a new federation president and there is a lot of speculation related to the new project and a new coach," Cantu told La Tercera.

Incoming Mexico federation president Decio de Maria sacked coach Miguel Herrera last month, just one day after El Tri won the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the nation's first major title since 2011.

Since then, Sampaoli's name has been included among those rumored to be contenders for the job, along with ex-Marseille coach Marcelo Bielsa, Jose Antonio Camacho and Ricardo Ferretti.

Sampaoli has also been reported to be a candidate to coach Internacional in the Brazilian league.
