Mexico still aiming for Copa America final, says Miguel Herrera

Mexico have had mixed results in their matches leading up to the Copa America, but coach Miguel Herrera isn't any less enthusiastic about his team's chances in Chile.

El Tri have defeated Guatemala, drawn against Peru and lost to Brazil in preparation for the tournament in Chile, which begins this week.

But Herrera, who arrived in Santiago de Chile on Monday, said Mexico still aim for a deep run.

"This team is looking to reach the final and we'll try to get there," Herrera said. "Honestly, we're not setting any different goal for ourselves. I repeat, we got better over the preparation matches."

Herrera leads a weakened squad to Chile, with the bulk of Mexico's World Cup team and Europe-based stars involved in CONCACAF's Gold Cup in July.

The first task for El Tri will be to get out of Group A, which contains host Chile, Ecuador and Bolivia, and Friday's opener in Vina del Mar against Bolivia is vital to Mexico's chances of advancing, according to Herrera.

"The first game is essential, we go into it with the idea of getting the three points," said Herrera. "Winning is vital to be clear that we can aspire to the next round."

Herrera discounted any injury concerns and emphasized Jesus "Tecatito" Corona and Hugo Ayala were taken off against Brazil as precautions, but stressed players will have to be 100 percent committed to get in the starting team.

"Whoever stops running or doesn't run, [or] doesn't do what he has to affects the group," explained Herrera. "That's what this team is: eleven guys that are ready to win back the ball and want to create spaces and chances for their teammates."

The Mexico squad trained for the first time in Chile on Tuesday morning at the Estadio Municipal de La Pintana.
