Miguel Herrera blasts critics

MEXICO -- Miguel "El Piojo" Herrera defended himself in the face of critics who said he was asked to coach El Tri on the orders of Mexico TV magnate Emilio Azcarraga, who is also the owner of Club America.

Ramos: Who is really in charge

"Those who say that it was the people at Televisa who got me the job are much mistaken, they're quite wrong," Herrera said Tuesday. "Putting the America coaching team in place (on El Tri)including Ricardo Pelaez as director of soccer was on the initiative of (Chivas owner) Jorge Vergara. The one who was least keen on the idea was Mr. Yon de Luisa, who is president of the sporting committee of America."

Herrera said all 13 Mexican League club owners had been consulted and favored the idea, leaving America no option but to agree, but only for the two matches against New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Herrera gave assurances that he was looking into the possibility of releasing to Leon those of its players that have joined El Tri so that they can participate in week 15 and help Leon secure its passage into the playoffs.

Interviewed on the ESPN Mexico's Toque Inicial, the new coach made clear that he enjoyed the full support of the coach of Leon, Gustavo Matosas, but stated that they didn't want to disadvantage any Mexican soccer team.

"We’ve already been discussing this with various people, but this situation is now only being discussed by Gonzalez Inarritu and Ricardo Pelaez. We are not closed off to anyone, we don't want to disadvantage any team, we understand that Leon is battling to qualify, unlike America which has already done so, and this is what Leon's supporters are claiming."
