League bans Chivas fan groups

The Mexican league’s disciplinary committee on Monday penalized Atlas with a $25,800 fine and a one-match stadium ban for its next home match at Estadio Jalisco in the wake of fan violence during the Atlas-Chivas derby last Saturday that left several police wounded.

Chivas (Club Guadalajara), as well as the league, also banned its supporters’ groups indefinitely from all stadiums, beginning with this Sunday’s SuperClasico, when Chivas hosts America. Atlas will not be allowed to use its home stadium (Estadio Jalisco) for its next home match.

The league also asked Chivas to provide them with names of fans who were involved in Saturday’s violence as well as sending a general message to fans to help in the identification of the fans involved.

The league, in a media release, asked "all fans to support the eradication of violence and promote fair play in and out of the stadiums."

The traditional clasico tapatio ended in a 1-1 draw. Chivas has had past incidents of fan violence and last year took a similar stance against its supporters group.

"We have to act and not let them into the stadiums again," said El Tri captain and Leon defender Rafa Marquez. "No one likes to see these kind of images."
