Mohamed to replace Miguel Herrera

Argentine Antonio Mohamed was named to replace Miguel “Piojo” Herrera as coach of Club America in the Mexican League, club president Ricardo Pelaez confirmed Tuesday.

Canales: Only Leon stands in America's way

Miguel Herrera will step down at Club America after Sunday's final.

“It is good to know that he is taking on the job and is aware how important the continuity of this project is,” Pelaez told Univision. “He’s a good coach and he’s ambitious.”

Mohamed was coach at Tijuana in 2012 and most recently coached Argentina B level Club Atletico Huracan. He takes over the reins at America next week from Herrera, who led defending champion America to the Apertura 2013 playoffs final.

Herrera is taking a break from the club team to devote his full attention to coaching El Tri as it prepares for the 2014 World Cup.

Herrera will lead America in its quest for its 12th league title vs. Leon with the first leg set for Thursday in Leon and the return match due Sunday at Estadio Azteca.

America defeated Toluca 2-0 to take a 3-2 aggregate victory Sunday, while Leon drew 2-2 against Santos Laguna to win 5-3 over the two legs.

The first leg of the Liga MX Apertura tournament final is Thursday in Leon, with the return leg in Estadio Azteca next Sunday. America is tied with Guadalajara rival Chivas on 11 league titles, while Leon, promoted to the first division in 2012, hasn't won a championship since 1992.
