Nine-man Club America holds Cruz Azul, Monterrey downs Atlas

America's Mateus Uribe receives a red card for his challenge on Cruz Azul defender Julio Dominguez.

Cruz Azul could only manage a 0-0 draw in Estadio Azul against Mexico City rival Club America on Thursday in the 2017 Apertura quarterfinal, despite Las Aguilas finishing the game with nine players.

Club America's Mateus Uribe was shown a straight red after half an hour, with Edson Alvarez given his second yellow in the 90th minute, while Cruz Azul goalkeeper Jesus Corona saved a penalty from Mexico teammate Oribe Peralta in the 36th.

Chile international Eduardo Vargas' second half equalizer handed Tigres a 1-1 away draw with Leon on Wednesday in the first leg of the Liga MX 2017 Apertura quarterfinal.

The result gives second seed Tigres a slight advantage heading into Saturday's second leg in Estadio Universitario, with the away goals rule in place for the Liga MX playoffs.

Vargas received the ball from Jesus Duenas on the edge of the penalty area in the 76th minute and shot low into the right-hand corner of the goal.

Javier Hernandez stresses West Ham commitment after Chivas link

West Ham striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez has denied a report that claimed he wanted to return to his first club, Mexican side Chivas Guadalajara, in January.

Hernandez, who joined West Ham in the summer, wrote on Twitter that the report, by Marca Claro, was "completely false."

He said that although he was a Chivas fan he wanted to stay at West Ham, now managed by David Moyes, to help them away from the wrong end of the Premier League table.
