Landon Donovan makes his first Leon appearance in win over Puebla

LEON, Mexico -- U.S. legend Landon Donovan made his Leon debut on Saturday, coming off the bench in the 83rd minute in his team's 2-1 Liga MX victory over Puebla.

The 35-year-old was playing his first match since he announced his return to the game in January, following a 14-month period since his last appearance for LA Galaxy on Nov. 6, 2016.

Donovan came on with Leon already 2-1 up and looking to see out the game, with the American's every touch applauded by the home fans.

Liga MX may suspend promotion, relegation with Asensio MX

Pumas' resurgence adds more intrigue to the latest edition of the Clasico Capitalino.
The current system in Mexico's top flight sees one team promoted and one relegated each year.

Liga MX is considering suspending promotion and relegation starting in the 2019-20 season, with at least one second division club appalled by the prospect.

The Liga MX's development committee met on Tuesday and league president Enrique Bonilla admitted that a major change to the pro/rel system is being put forward, one that could reportedly be in place for four years.

"There are a lot of proposals on the table," Bonilla told reporters. "[Eliminating relegation] is one of them."

"There are others...

U.S. and LA Galaxy legend Landon Donovan is presented at Club Leon and addresses his new fans for the first time.

U.S. international forward Rubio Rubin has signed for Club Tijuana, the Liga MX club announced on Thursday night.

Rubin was a free agent and had been on the verge of signing a contract with MLS, with one source stating that a draft contract had been written up with terms agreed.

But Tijuana on Wednesday made a last effort to get a deal done and was able to secure Rubin's signature.

Rubin has spent his whole professional career in Europe. He signed with Dutch side FC Utrecht as an 18-year-old in...

Major League Soccer and Liga MX discussing champions match - sources

Toronto FC capped a treble season with an MLS Cup trophy after beating Seattle 2-0.
MLS champions Toronto FC could face this year's Liga MX champion in September as part of an annual event.

MLS and Liga MX are in discussions to have their respective champions face each other in an annual match, sources confirmed to ESPN FC.

The Washington Post was the first to report the news.

One league source stated that the details for the match have not been finalized but that it would take place some time during 2018, most likely in late summer.

The Post reported that the game would likely be held at BMO Field, home of current MLS champions Toronto FC.

Jonathan Gonzalez says World Cup spot wasn't guaranteed before switch

ESPN FC's Taylor Twellman doesn't understand comments that Jonathan Gonzalez fell through the cracks in U.S. Soccer after he made numerous appearances for the youth national team.

Former U.S. youth international Jonathan Gonzalez said his decision to choose Mexico at full international level was difficult and that no one in El Tri's set-up promised him a spot at the World Cup.

Dual national Gonzalez had been involved with U.S. youth national teams from the under-14 to under-20 levels, but opted to file for a switch of association with FIFA earlier this month to play for Mexico and was called into coach Juan Carlos Osorio's squad for next Wednesday's friendly against Bosnia...
