Last-minute header gives America draw with Pumas; Veracruz earn much-needed win
Henry Martin came off the bench to score a dramatic header in stoppage time as nine-man Club America drew with Pumas UNAM 2-2.
Pumas opened up the scoring just 18 seconds into the Clasico Capitalino on Saturday with a Felipe Mora header past the reach of goalkeeper Augustin Marchesin -- the fastest Liga MX goal since 2016.
America got on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute with a left-footed strike from Oribe Peralta, but saw their first red card on the night minutes later when Roger Martinez was sent off for tangling with Pumas defender Alejandro Arribas.
The match continued to turn chippy as Bruno Valdez became second America player to see red in the 68th minute following a hard challenge on Pablo Barrera.
Carlos Gonzalez gave Pumas the lead again in the 73th minute, only for Martin to come off the bench and eventually sink in his goal in the 92nd minute and salvage a result.
"I'm very happy with the attitude and determination that was shown because I have a squad that already know what they have to do," America coach Miguel Herrera said after the match.
America have not lost to their Mexico City rivals since a 3-0 defeat in the Apertura 2015.
The tie left a bitter taste among a Pumas side that has significantly cooled off since winning their first three matches of the Apertura 2018 tournament. They have not won in their last five contests.
"We did not put away that match and score another goal, we did not stay concentrated," Pumas boss David Patino said. "This is a draw that tastes of defeat because in reality we dropped two points."
In other Liga MX action, Veracruz beat Tijuana 1-0 in a win that provides some relief to Los Tiburones Rojos' mounting off-field issues.
The league initiated an audit this week into the Veracruz's finances following ongoing drama over the alleged use of "double contracts."
Veracruz were also without Juvenal Olmos, who was announced as the team's manager three matches ago but has yet to officially take the reins due to coaching license issues.
For the Xolos, they have not won in six straight league matches.
Victor Guzman and Erick Gutierrez each scored as Pachuca beat Puebla 2-0. The 23-year-old captain Gutierrez has scored in three straight games, and Pachuca extended its streak to four games without a loss.
Two scores in the final minutes left Tigres and Nexcaca with a 1-1 draw. Victor Davila scored in the 85th minute only for the Tigres striker Eduardo Vargas to convert a penalty in the 91st minute. Davila leads all Liga MX scorers with five goals.
Substitute striker Carlos Ferreira headed in a goal in the 87th minute to help Morelia come back from a two-goal deficit and earn a 2-2 draw with Monterrey.
