Mexico to hire Tigres' Tuca Ferretti as interim coach - sources

Tigres coach Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti is set to take over the Mexican national team on an interim basis, sources have told ESPN.

ESPN's Rene Tovar and David Faitelson reported the news on Thursday, ahead of El Tri's games against Uruguay (Sept. 7 in Houston) and the United States (Sept. 11 in Nashville, Tennessee).

Tigres president Miguel Garza said Thursday the Mexican federation (FMF) had spoken to the Liga MX club about the possibility of Ferretti -- whose Tigres team plays Necaxa on Saturday -- becoming El Tri's interim coach.

"The federation has made contact with us and we agreed to speak in coming days to make the best decision," Garza told reporters in Monterrey.

"As an institution we again feel proud and faltered that the coach they are putting forward as a candidate to manage these friendly games," he added.

Ferretti has previously said he would be available to take over the national team on a temporary basis, should the FMF need him, but that he doesn't want the job permanently.

The 64-year-old Brazil-born manager coached the Mexican national team over four games in 2015, with El Tri defeating the United States to earn a place at the 2017 Confederations Cup.

ESPN's Faitelson reported that Ferretti may also be hired for the October friendly dates, when Mexico may be lining up games against Chile in Tigres' Estadio Universitario and against Costa Rica in Toluca's Estadio Nemesio Diez.
