Queretaro's Marcel Ruiz, 17, becomes youngest scorer of Liga MX season

Marcel Ruiz became the youngest Liga MX player to score this season as Queretaro beat Pumas, 1-0.

The 17-year-old midfielder's shot in the 14th minute from the top of the penalty box skipped past goalkeeper Alfredo Saldivar, giving the youngster his first career goal.

Ruiz has made eight appearances played across all competitions, including his fourth start on Tuesday.

Queretaro manager Rafael Puente Jr. said he noticed Ruiz's talent after one training session with the senior side.

"We were convinced he had the quality for fight for a spot on the first team," Puente said.

Ruiz is the only 17-year-old to record minutes in the current tournament. Seven 18-year-olds have played this season.

The shutout was Pumas' third straight shutout following a three-game win streak to open the season.

In other Liga MX action, Chivas held on to a 1-0 win over Necaxa to win their first home game since October 2017. Angel Zaldivar converted a penalty in the 25th minute to give Chivas the three points ahead of their derby against Atlas on Friday.

Atlas dropped their match against Puebla as Alejandro Chumacero and Daniel Arreola scores gave the home side a 2-0 win. Atlas has now gone scoreless in its last 719 minutes and is inching closer to the worst scoring drought in club history in the top flight, set in 1981 (1,075 minutes).

Pachuca managed a 1-1 draw against Morelia after a Victor Guzman goal in the 77th minute. The game also marked the 25th anniversary of Tuzos reserve goalkeeper Oscar Perez's debut. At 45, Perez is the second-oldest Liga MX player ever behind Salvador Reyes -- who appeared for Chivas in 2008 at the age of 71.
