Cuatro grandes and clasicos: A beginner's guide to watching Liga MX

Sebastian Salazar and Herculez Gomez assess Mexico's World Cup after a last 16 exit and discuss why Liga MX could be a hindrance on El Tri's future.

It isn't easy to jump into the Mexican first division.

While countless new fans find difficulties with the language barrier, several others get lost in the long list of idiosyncrasies that define the Liga MX. A quick discussion on promotion and relegation alone is enough to confuse even the most die-hard of soccer supporters.

Nonetheless, it's worth the trouble. With an impressive technical level of play, no lack of enthralling matches and a number of talents hidden among the 18 teams, it's easy...

Cruz Azul, America to play on new turf at Azteca Stadium

Sebi Salazar sounds off on why he can't be proud of Mexico after a seventh straight World Cup exit in the last 16, even against a team like Brazil.

MEXICO CITY -- The field at Azteca Stadium has been resurfaced in time for the new season to begin for its two tenants, Cruz Azul and America.

Earlier this summer, the old grass was removed and replaced by a newer, more resilient turf. Cruz Azul will play for the first time on the new surface when they open their Mexican Liga Bancomer season Saturday against Puebla.

Chivas kick off the 2018 Apertura in very different shape than fans would've hoped for and expected 14 months ago, when the Guadalajara club hoisted title No. 12 to make it a league and cup double in the 2017 Clausura.

The championship was supposed to herald a brighter future for the side, closing the book on relegation problems and providing evidence that an all-Mexican squad could compete for titles in an increasingly foreigner-dominated Liga MX.

"It means the end and the beginning," Chivas...

Arrest warrant for former Chivas coach Ricardo La Volpe not granted - lawyer

Off the sidelines for a year, Ricardo La Volpe still obsesses over the game.
Former Chivas manager Ricardo La Volpe is currently the technical advisor in Egypt for Pyramids F.C.

A warrant for the arrest of former Chivas coach Ricardo La Volpe has not been granted, according to the Argentine's lawyer Enrique Venegas del Toro.

Reports had spread on Tuesday that authorities in the Mexican state of Jalisco had issued an arrest warrant for La Volpe relating to a 2014 case for alleged "inappropriate conduct" towards the club's foot hygienist after he had coached just four matches.

La Volpe was fired from the club, but maintained his innocence and has gone on to coach Chiapas...

MEXICO CITY -- The summer transfer window is still open for Liga MX, and it's been nothing short of shocking. Djaniny Tavares, who became league champion and finished as top scorer at the 2018 Clausura tournament, has left for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli. The Cape Verde striker therefore joins a small list of key players who contributed goals to their former sides and whose departures have team executives...
