Sao Paulo can't guarantee Olympic participation as host for matches

Sao Paulo's participation in the Olympic tournament is in doubt.

SAO PAULO -- Local officials say Sao Paulo will not be able to guarantee its participation in the Olympic football tournament by the time the match schedule must be completed next week.

Olympic organizers say they will include Sao Paulo as a host when the schedule is released, but it could be another month or so before the local government decides whether it has enough money to participate in the competition.

Silva was in the Brazil lineup that suffered the crushing humiliation of losing 7-1 to Germany on home territory in the World Cup semifinal last year, and hopes to help make up for that if chosen as one of three overage...

The FA had originally ruled out entering male and female Great Britain teams in Rio de Janeiro but has since written to the Scottish, Northern Irish and Welsh associations asking if they would like to take part.

That move caused some anger at the FAW, which fears it may threaten its independent status...
