Match Commentary

More heartbreak for Portugal, and that Ronaldo penalty decision will haunt them for years you feel. For Spain, they march on. Can they make history and win a third successive major tournament? And who will they face? Germany or Italy? Join us tomorrow to find out....

You can see Ronaldo's logic, saving himself for what might have been the key penalty but to get through the shoot-out without having your best spot kick taker strike a ball in anger is ridiculous. He should have taken the fourth - the one Alves missed.

It's never a nice way to settle a game but it had an air of inevitability about it. The Bruno Alves episode was the bizarre thing about that shootout. He stepped up to take the third, then Nani stopped him. When Alves did step up for the following penalty, he was destined to miss.
