Marseille manager Franck Passi calls for patience after disappointing start

Marseille manager Franck Passi insists there is no cause for panic, despite his team taking only one point from their first two matches of the Ligue 1 season.

Following a 0-0 draw at home to Toulouse on the opening weekend, Marseille conceded a goal in the first minute of their game at Guingamp on Sunday before slumping to a 2-1 defeat.

The 2010 French champions finished 13th last season, but Passi, 50, is not feeling any extra pressure after a slow start to his first full campaign in charge.

"I think it's the trademark of Olympique de Marseille," he told a news conference following Sunday's game. "When you're manager of Olympique de Marseille, you're under pressure.

"I accepted this role and I'll accept the pressure too... if we manage to win one match, everything will follow after that."

Marseille secured their Ligue 1 status extremely late last season and -- given that the club have made wholesale changes to their playing staff since, for a second year running -- Passi believes it will take time for results to improve.

"After two matches, we're not going to draw any conclusions," he said. "You don't change a team completely and then have results very quickly; we're not going to panic.

"We're going to have the patience necessary to develop and to have a team that works. There's real potential."

On-loan Newcastle attacker Florian Thauvin, who came off the bench to reduce the deficit late on, also put a positive spin on things.

"I think everyone can recognise that this team has a lot of potential," he told reporters.

"There are players in the team with a lot of experience who've had a big career. There are young players with a huge amount of talent.

"Now it's necessary for things to come together. It's necessary to take points, to win matches and for the squad to gain confidence.

"But I'm confident. We're going to continue to work. The squad has changed a lot compared to last year.

"No pain, no gain. We have to work and, as I said, I have confidence in my team that it will go well."
