Vincent Labrune to leave Marseille as president before 2016-17 starts

Marseille president Vincent Labrune has confirmed that he will be stepping down from the role before the new French league season gets underway on Aug. 14.

Labrune has served as president since June 2011 but he became increasingly unpopular with fans during a turbulent campaign for the club last season.

Marseille were put up for sale in April and it appears that overseeing the transfer of striker Michy Batshuayi to Chelsea will be Labrune's last major act at the club.

"I won't be there for the resumption," he told La Provence. "I think that if you stop, you really stop. And I really want to stop."

The decision is set to be finalised at a meeting on July 21.

Last season, Marseille manager Marcelo Bielsa quit after the opening weekend of Ligue 1 and the club ended up flirting with relegation as they went a record 15 league games without a home win.

They finally broke that run against Reims in May but three league wins at the Stade Velodrome and a 13th-placed finish were very much below expectations for the nine-time French champions.

Marseille lost the Coupe de France final against Paris Saint-Germain in May, meaning that the 2012 Coupe de la Ligue is the only trophy that the club has won during Labrune's time as president.
