Steve Mandanda rejects Besiktas to stay at Marseille

Marseille goalkeeper and captain Steve Mandanda said he had rejected a move to Turkish club Besiktas to stay with the Ligue 1 outfit.

Mandanda, 30, has a year left on his OM deal and had suggested he could seek a new challenge after eight years at the Stade Velodrome.

But the France international told TF1 he would not be moving with the club in flux following Marcelo Bielsa's shock resignation after the opening game of the season and Michel's appointment as coach.

Describing the offer as "interesting," he added: "I thought about it for a long time, but I didn't see myself leaving like that. I didn't want to get off the ride. I'm staying at the club."

Marseille have had a poor start to the Ligue 1 season, taking only three points from their opening four matches.

They trounced newly-promoted Troyes 6-0 for their only win of the campaign, but then suffered a 2-0 loss to Guingamp on Friday.

Mandanda's decision is another blow to Besiktas, whose move for Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes has fallen through, according to widespread reports.

The BBC, Sport and AS all reported that Valdes had been due to fly to Turkey to complete the deal on Sunday -- but that Besiktas then attempted to change the terms of the contract and the former Barcelona goalkeeper backed out of the move.
