Manchester United haven't discussed replacing Jose Mourinho with Zinedine Zidane - sources

MANCHESTER, England -- Jose Mourinho retains the full support of Manchester United's board as sources close to the club have dismissed reports the club have already discussed the possibility of appointing Zinedine Zidane.

Mourinho's position at Old Trafford is coming under increasing scrutiny after a summer of disharmony and a dire 3-2 defeat at Brighton on Sunday.

But sources have told ESPN FC that executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward remains confident -- for now -- that the Portuguese can turn things around.

Mourinho only signed a new contract in January which could keep him at the club until 2021. He is currently the favourite with a number of bookmakers to be the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season.

The dismal performance at Brighton -- United's third consecutive Premier League away game without a win -- came after reports in France and Spain that Zidane is top of Woodward's wishlist should Mourinho depart.

The Frenchman is currently without a job after leaving Real Madrid in the summer. He won a La Liga and three Champions League titles in just two-and-a-half seasons at the Bernabeu and has not ruled out taking a managerial job in England.

However, sources said that United have not sought to sound out the 46-year-old about the job should it become available in the future.

United will now look to kick-start their season when Tottenham visit Old Trafford on Monday.

Mauricio Pochettino's side have started the new campaign with two wins from two after victories over Newcastle and Fulham.
