Ashley Young believes the controversial Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will fail unless match officials drastically cut the time taken to make decisions in games, the Manchester United defender told ESPN FC
Since the introduction in January of a VAR trial period in cup competitions in England, the system has led to a series of highly-publicised incidents and question marks over its flaws.
The first half of Wednesday's FA Cup fifth-round replay between Tottenham and Rochdale at Wembley saw a number of debatable VAR-related decisions, leading to five minutes of stoppage time at the end of the opening 45 minutes.
And Young was involved in another high-profile VAR incident earlier this month when Juan Mata was judged to be offside from the full-back's cross when scoring in the FA Cup win at Huddersfield.
"For me, it's one of those things where I don't know whether it is taking something away [from the game] -- the waiting around to find out the decisions," Young said. "It can be too long and it can be frustrating.
"But it is one of those things -- if the system comes in and it starts getting better, then I think it can work.
"It is just when you've having to wait for one minute 40 seconds, or two minutes, whatever it is.
"And if [the system] is going away and constantly asking, asking, asking, I'm not sure it is going to work if that is going to be the case.
"But as long as they nail it down and shorten the time needed to make decisions, I'm sure it can help."
The Football Association will continue with the VAR experiment in the FA Cup quarterfinals, including United's Old Trafford clash with Brighton. Wigan's home tie against Southampton will be the only quarterfinal tie not played with VAR.
Meanwhile, a source confirmed to ESPN FC that Young and teammate Daley Blind have signed new contracts until next summer.
The moves are somewhat of a formality, done to ensure United will get a fee for either player should they look to leave Old Trafford in the summer, as their contracts had been set to expire. United have recently given similar deals to Luke Shaw and Juan Mata, who are also tied to the club until 2019.
Young would appear to be more likely to stay on than Blind, who has played in only 15 games for United this season.
