Man United's Paul Pogba should be motivated after being dropped - Gary Neville

Paul Pogba should use his recent problems at Manchester United to become a better player, Gary Neville has told Goal.

Pogba missed games against Huddersfield Town and Sevilla with speculation around his future at the club and relationship with manager Jose Mourinho before returning to the team for the 2-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday at Old Trafford.

Neville insisted the 24-year-old should use those instances to spur him on.

"It's tough for Paul Pogba to take as he's been left out of the big match," Neville said. "But I was at United for 20 years and saw players left out of big matches -- sometimes players that were perhaps better than Paul Pogba.

"He shouldn't take it as an offence. He should knuckle down and do what all great players do, all great characters do, when they get dropped is basically fight harder to make their way into the team."

Pogba has been a regular in Mourinho's team since his then-record £89.3 million move from Juventus in 2016.

However, his 90 minutes against Chelsea marked the first time he has played a full game this month. Neville, though, insists it comes with the territory when one signs for United.

"Over the last 10, 15 years, you think of Wayne Rooney who's been dropped -- he's one of the greatest players United have had," Neville said.

"Other players -- Nemanja Vidic at times, Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, myself -- all players who have played 400, 500 or 600 games for the club have been dropped.

"I wouldn't class myself as a great player, but there's no given you are going to play in the team. Everyone has to accept it's going to come to them and that you're going to be dropped, and that can be in different parts of your career."
