Man United expect De Gea to reject Real Madrid, extend deal - sources

Manchester United are confident David De Gea will reject renewed interest from Real Madrid and extend his contract at Old Trafford, sources have told ESPN FC.

The Spanish goalkeeper has 18 months to run on his current deal, with United also holding an option to extend it by another season until 2020.

Sources have told ESPN FC there is no rush on either side to commit to a new agreement.

However, after tentative discussions began earlier this season, there has been enough progress for United to feel confident the 27-year-old is willing to turn down Real Madrid to stay at the club he joined from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

De Gea almost moved to the Bernabeu in 2015. The European champions are keen to sign a goalkeeper in the summer and have been linked with moves for De Gea and Chelsea No. 1 Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian is involved in his own contract renegotiation at Stamford Bridge.

De Gea put in a man-of-the-match performance against Sevilla in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday night.

He made a stunning save to deny Luis Muriel in the first half to ensure United head to Old Trafford for the second leg on March 13 level in the tie after a 0-0 draw.
