Man United fans get subsidised tickets for Sevilla; price hike for Sevilla fans

ESPN FC's Steve Nicol goes player-by-player to determine who should remain and who should depart Manchester United's back line.

Manchester United have announced they will subsidise ticket costs for supporters travelling to the Champions League clash with Sevilla after the Spanish side refused to lower their prices.

United fans attending the game at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on Feb. 21 had been told they would have to pay £89

However, they were sent an email on Wednesday morning confirming United have set prices at £54 -- the price Liverpool fans paid for a ticket for their group stage game with Sevilla in November -- meaning each supporter will receive a £35 refund.

United said they have taken the "difficult" decision to charge Sevilla fans £89 for the return leg at Old Trafford on March 13 to make up the shortfall.

The email sent out to fans read: "In this instance we believe that our travelling supporters are unfairly being subjected to increased/excessive ticket prices from the host club.

"This has been raised with Sevilla, and internally, but ultimately Sevilla have not agreed to significantly lower the price of tickets for our fans to what we view as a reasonable level.

"Therefore we have taken the difficult decision to charge Sevilla fans for the return leg at Old Trafford the same amount as our fans have been charged for the away fixture.

"We have decided to increase the ticket prices for Sevilla fans for the game at Old Trafford, and use this increase to subsidise our fans."

Sources have told ESPN FC the club hope the move will act as a deterrent to other sides looking to increase prices for United fans.

Sevilla insist the hike reflects the added importance of the game because it is a round-of-16 tie, but it is not the first time United supporters have been subjected to increased prices.

In 2012, fans were charged £77.50 to watch a Europa League tie with Athletic Bilbao and £71 in 2016 for a game against FC Midtjylland in the same competition.
