David De Gea happy to see Sergio Romero get Man United chance

David De Gea insists Manchester United teammate Sergio Romero deserved his chance against Derby County.

Romero has not featured in the Premier League yet this season, but was given the nod for the 2-0 win over Derby in the FA Cup third round at Old Trafford on Friday.

Manager Jose Mourinho says Romero needs games ahead of next summer's World Cup and De Gea insists the Argentina international has earned his opportunity.

He told MUTV: "Of course, as a player, I want to play every game in every competition.

"Of course, the FA Cup is a special trophy and I want to play every game but I know there are other players who want to play as well and have a chance to play.

"It's good to have a bigger squad with a lot of players so, when we have a lot of games, we can change the players and it's good to use the squad."

Mourinho's squad head to Dubai on Monday for a warm weather training camp following a run of five games in 14 days.

When they return, United have games against Stoke, Burnley, Tottenham, Huddersfield and Newcastle before the Champions League restarts in February.

And after such a busy period, De Gea is happy to spend a week away from Carrington.

He added: "It's a bit crazy with a lot of games at this time but we have to play and have to try to win.

"It is always a special time for everyone. They [friends in Spain] think everyone is on holiday but we play and this is England. This is the history of the Premier League.

"So it is good to have some rest to recover after so many games. It's good for the team and for the players to have some rest to relax, recover and train."
