Manchester United great Ryan Giggs relishing Vietnam academy role

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs says he is "excited" to start his new role with a football academy in Vietnam.

Giggs has signed up for a two-year stint as a technical director at PVF football academy.

The 43-year-old visited for the first time earlier this month and will return to help train players and coaches.

He said: "It's just a consultancy role so it requires me to go two or three times a year for a week or so. I'm not going out there full-time. It's exciting.

"I think lots of places in the world want to build from grassroots and be recognised all around the world for football.

"It's exciting for me and I'm looking forward to it."

Giggs was speaking an event for United's Scandinavian Supporters' Club in Manchester.

He was joined by fellow "Class of 92" graduate Nicky Butt, now United's academy head.

Butt said he has been impressed with the start Jose Mourinho's team has made to the season, sitting second in the Premier League table and top of their Champions League group.

And he says Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have returned at a key time in the title race ahead of the first derby of the season against Manchester City at Old Trafford next week.

He told Scandinavian supporters' magazine United-Supporteren: "It's been a decent season for Man United. They're doing well, they're winning games and started off really well.

"On the other side, Man City are doing really well, too. They've taken the reins really in leading the chase for the championship.

"But it's a good start from us. We've played better than we did last year. We've got some big, big players in the squad now and we're looking strong. Hopefully we can get a few results leading in to the Man City game, which is the big one.

"People like Pogba and Zlatan are massive characters in the dressing room. You miss them for different reasons. You miss them on the pitch, but you also miss them in the changing rooms.

"You need leaders and that's what they are. They're leaders for the team."
