Angel Gomes happy to wait for Man United chance after record debut

Angel Gomes insists he is happy to wait for another chance in Manchester United's first team despite becoming the club's youngest debutant in more than 50 years last season.

Gomes, 16, came on as a late substitute for Wayne Rooney during the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on the final day of the Premier League campaign. But the forward says he is only focused on impressing for the Under-18s and U23s next year.

He told the club's official website: "I think people forget how young I am really. Of course, it would be a great experience to get a few more minutes in the first team under my belt at some point but I'll just try to kick on in the U18s and U23s and learn a lot of things.

"I hope to gain a lot of experience in the UEFA Youth League, for example, and the reserves have a new coach in Ricky [Sbragia] so it'll be great to work under him too."

Last season was capped with his senior debut, but it also saw the teenager play in goal during an indoor tournament in Germany and serve as a ball boy for the FA Cup tie against Wigan.

He was left off the first-team tour of the United States this summer so he could travel to Austria for a joint training camp with the U18s and U23s. And he has not been short of advice from established stars as he has made his way up through the ranks from United's U6s.

"To go from being a ball-boy to coming on for Wayne Rooney was amazing," he added. "What a player to come on for. Wayne Rooney is a club legend who I think will do amazing at Everton. He helped me and spoke to me, when I was coming on, so it was nice.

"Nani is my godfather. He's been amazing to me and gives me lots of advice. I am just lucky to have someone like that in my life.

"When I was younger, he used to be my idol. I used to watch him and even practice his backflips on the trampoline. I know I can't do that now."
