Chris Smalling: Manchester United's Marcus Rashford has everything

BURTON UPON TRENT, England -- Chris Smalling has said he did not know who Marcus Rashford was before the striker made his Manchester United debut, but now thinks he has "got everything."

Rashford was thrown into the United first team amid a spate of injuries in February 2016, making his full debut against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League and scoring twice.

Members of the United squad knew little about the teenager, but within a few months he had become an established member of Louis van Gaal's side and won a call-up to the England squad for Euro 2016.

"I didn't know anything about him," United and England teammate Smalling said. "He trained with us for a couple of days because we were struggling with injuries.

"He was playing on the right wing that day, and it only takes a few minutes for someone with good quality to show what they're about."

Rashford, 19, has already made himself an automatic selection for Gareth Southgate's England squad and is in contention to play in Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Scotland.

And Smalling said: "The world is his oyster. He can be one of the best. You forget how old he is, how few games he's played. But as a player he's got everything. He's quick, he's strong and his temperament is fantastic.

"There's always some young players who change, but with Marcus I don't think he'll ever change. It's just the way he is. He's a kid who wants to play football.

"He's a fantastic talent and I'm glad he's on my team."

Smalling was asked whether he could compare Rashford to anyone else, but suggested the striker has an individual talent.

"I think he could be out on his own," he said. "He's still very young and I'm looking forward to see how far he goes for England and United."

Rashford said he believes being in the England senior squad, rather than going with the under-21s to their European Championships in Poland this year, was the correct step.

"I am thankful that he [Southgate] has made that decision and I am happy to be with the seniors and to continue my development," he said.
