Juan Mata wants to extend Manchester United contract and win more trophies

Juan Mata wants to sign a new contract at Manchester United and win the Premier League or Champions League with the club.

Mata, 28, joined from Chelsea in January 2014 and won the FA Cup last season, but he is eager to commit his long-term future.

"I have two years left on my contract and I would like to stay beyond that," he told the Sun. "I am happy here and obviously since I came we have won the FA Cup, Community Shield and now we have another chance to win a trophy.

"I am thinking that the fans are amazing here even in the bad moments. So I am thinking what happens if we win the Premier League or Champions League in the future years? It will be incredible to celebrate them so I have that in my head."

The FA Cup is the only major trophy United have won since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013 but, under Jose Mourinho, Mata hopes the club are on the verge of becoming a force again.

"Hopefully it is the start of something," he said. "We started with the Community Shield and now we can have the second one. We are still alive in the FA Cup and the Europa League so let's see what happens. Every player here has the right mentality to think we can do something important this season and in the future for this club.

"Hopefully in a few years we can speak about how we brought silverware to the club again and it can be the start of a good era again."
