Man United legend Paul Scholes taking coaching badges - sources

Paul Scholes is taking his coaching badges as he takes his first steps into a possible move into management, sources close to the former Manchester United star have told ESPN FC.

Scholes, who had a brief stint as a coach at United in 2011-12, has been working in the media since ending his second spell as a player in 2013 but has now enrolled in a fast-track coaching course.

He began working toward his A Licence at Blackburn Rovers' academy earlier this week, which could see him fully qualified by the end of the season in the FA scheme to help elite ex-players move into coaching.

Wigan Athletic have been credited with an interest in Scholes, with manager Warren Joyce, who had been in charge of United's under-21 side until last month, said to be keen to involve the former England midfielder. However, sources told ESPN FC there has not yet been any contact between Scholes and the Championship club.

Scholes has seen a number of his old United teammates take their badges to move into coaching with Gary Neville having worked for England and Valencia, Phil Neville at Manchester United and Valencia, and Nicky Butt currently head coach at United's academy.

United legend Ryan Giggs is also looking for his first job as a manager and sources have told ESPN FC that former Wales international could ask Scholes to join his staff if he secures a suitable role.

Giggs, who worked as first-team coach, caretaker manager and assistant coach at United before leaving in the summer, had been linked with jobs at Swansea City, Wigan and MK Dons.
