Man United's Anthony Martial: EFL Cup brace 'a real confidence boost'

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial said his confidence has been lifted after scoring twice during the 4-1 win against West Ham United in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Martial was back in the United side, having been left out of the previous two games, and responded by doubling his goal tally for the season. The 20-year-old is now hoping to keep up his momentum against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

He told MUTV: "Firstly, it felt great to score in the week as I've not played that regularly of late. It was good to get those two goals as it's a real confidence boost -- hopefully we can take that into the game on Sunday.

"We've had a lot of draws recently and have come up against goalkeepers in amazing form. But we've worked really hard to improve our efficiency and effectiveness in front of goal and hopefully that will pay off."

The former Monaco forward has happy memories of facing Everton, having been the match-winner in the clubs' two most recent meetings. He scored the decisive goal in the 2-1 win in the FA Cup semifinal in April and the only goal in a 1-0 Premier League win over the Merseyside club three weeks earlier.

Discussing the semifinal winner at Wembley, he said: "That was a special game -- a semifinal at a massive stadium. To score a goal at Wembley in a big game is always going to be something else, but it was even more special because it was right at the end of the game in the last minute, so I just had to go and celebrate that moment with the fans."

That Wembley win meant United completed a treble of victories over Everton last season, following on from a 3-0 triumph at Goodison Park in the league during October. It ended a run of three successive defeats on that ground for United.

Martial said: "What was key in that game was that we started the game really well and put Everton under pressure right from the word go, which then allowed us to play our way and really dictate the game. It was a great victory and hopefully we can repeat it this year."
