Manchester United's Matteo Darmian puzzled by Jose Mourinho snub

Italian right-back Matteo Darmian is puzzled by Jose Mourinho's reluctance to put him in Manchester United's starting XI since the start of the season.

Mourinho has preferred Antonio Valencia in the role, while Ashley Young has also been utilised at right-back since Mourinho took the helm.

Darmian, 26, did not feature in any Premier League matches until the goalless draw against Burnley last month, due partly to the lengthy injury list at Old Trafford.

Valencia is out with a broken arm while Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling have had spells on the sidelines.

Despite his lack of game time at club level, Darmian played a starring role for Italy in their 0-0 draw against Germany on Tuesday night.

With a big game against title rivals Arsenal at Old Trafford on Saturday, the Italian defender is hoping to make it four starts in a row.

"I don't know why, that's a difficult question to answer," Darmian told Rai Sport.

"The coach has to make his decisions and we players have to accept them. I always worked hard and gave my best when called upon and I'll continue to do that.

"I certainly don't lack determination and that is fundamental, especially during a period where you don't play as much.

"From the first day I have put myself at the disposal of the team and tried to prove myself to the coach."

Darmian was also quick to refute claims that he is keen on a move to Inter Milan, preferring to focus on the Arsenal game.

"I don't know, it's early to talk about the transfer market. Tomorrow I return to Manchester and we have an important match against Arsenal, one everyone wants to play in." he added.
