Man United full-back Luke Shaw's fitness defended by Adam Lallana

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has been defended as "mentally and physically strong" by former Southampton teammate Adam Lallana.

United manager Jose Mourinho revealed earlier this month that Shaw and Chris Smalling did not feel fit enough to face Swansea City, with the Portuguese later in the day questioning the bravery of certain players without naming the pair.

However, Liverpool midfielder Lallana, who played with Shaw at Southampton before they went their separate ways in 2014, insists his ex-teammate is not someone lacking in toughness.

"I was with Luke Shaw at Southampton, he's a very strong boy," Lallana is quoted as saying by the Daily Express.

"He's had a horrific leg injury. You don't come back from that without being mentally and physically strong. You don't come back from a leg break like he had without having difficult times mentally on your own."

Shaw, meanwhile, posted a video of himself on Instagram on Sunday showing him working out on his weekend off.
