Peter Schmeichel: Michael Carrick must start regularly for Man United

Peter Schmeichel has said Michael Carrick must play for Manchester United when he is fit and that he would like to see Bastian Schweinsteiger involved again -- but not at Carrick's expense.

Carrick, 35, was in United's starting lineup for the first time in the Premier League this season, in their 3-1 win away against Swansea City on Sunday.

The former England midfielder has made six appearances for United in all competitions this season and they have won all of those games.

Schmeichel posted on his Twitter account that United looked "a different, more confident side with Carrick in midfield" and added he was "running the show."

The former United goalkeeper added: "[Jose] Mourinho must play him whenever he's fit. Gives players like Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], [Paul] Pogba and [Wayne] Rooney more space and better options."

When asked about Schweinsteiger, Schmeichel said: "He's a top class player, and I'd like to see him involved again, but he's not a better player than Carrick."

Carrick has started in the Community Shield against Leicester City, the EFL Cup against Northampton Town and Manchester City, and also in the Europa League against Fenerbahce.

Before facing Swansea, Carrick's only appearance in the Premier League had been 12 minutes off the bench at the end of United's 4-1 home win against Leicester.
