Marcus Rashford at U21 tournament may make 'no sense' - Jose Mourinho

MANCHESTER -- Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said it "makes no sense" for Marcus Rashford to play in the European Under-21 Championship next summer if he is a regular in the England senior team.

It has been reported that England under-21s hope to take Rashford, 18, to next summer's tournament in Poland, despite the fact that he has won five caps for the senior side.

"The reports didn't arrive at my office, so we don't know," Mourinho told a news conference.

"We are in mid-October. The championships would be in the summer and we will wait and see what happens. If the player becomes a regular in the senior national team, development in the U21s makes no sense.

"It's the same that he's a regular here with us, and then we are going to play him in the U23 championship because we want to beat somebody and he can give us a help in that.

"If he is an U21 player then he is an U21 player and there is no discussion. If he becomes a regular choice for [England interim boss Gareth] Southgate then we have to speak."

Rashford's first of his five senior caps saw him score in a starting debut in May, while he has then been given four run-outs as a substitute.

He made his sole England U21 appearance in September, netting a hat trick, before returning to the senior setup for the World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovakia earlier this month.
