Robin van Persie's Man United volley voted best Premier League goal

Former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie's stunning volley against Aston Villa in April 2013 has been voted the best goal of the Premier League era.

Van Persie took the accolade after a vote among players who had scored more than 100 goals in the division.

He received an award at a Legends of Football event in London which celebrated 25 seasons of Premier League football and raised money for charity.

Van Persie's goal, smashed home from a Wayne Rooney pass as United secured their 20th league title that night, was the second of a first-half hat trick.

"It's a huge honour," he said. "It's the hardest league in the world.

"On a goal like that, you don't really think about it. You just want to make the most of it and see what happens. But you need a bit of luck as well.

"It was the first title I won and it was a huge moment for Manchester United. What I like about that goal is the whole story that was behind it."
