Jose Mourinho right to criticise Mark Clattenburg after derby - Graham Poll

Jose Mourinho was "absolutely right" to criticise Mark Clattenburg after Saturday's Manchester derby defeat, former referee Graham Poll has said in the Daily Mail.

Mourinho's Manchester United side had been trailing 2-1 at Old Trafford when Clattenburg waved away appeals for a penalty after Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo had dived into a challenge on Wayne Rooney.

"Jose Mourinho was absolutely right to be critical of referee Mark Clattenburg's failure to award Manchester United a penalty after Claudio Bravo flew studs-first into Wayne Rooney," Poll wrote in his column for the newspaper.

"Clattenburg felt the City keeper had played the ball but he knows that, whenever a player dives into a challenge with both feet off the ground out of control, a foul must be given.

"If the ball is played cleanly then a yellow card is issued but if the opponent is caught, solely or as well as the ball, a red card should be shown."

Another penalty appeal from United followed, for handball, when Antonio Valencia's cross struck Nicolas Otamendi.

However, Poll said Clattenburg was correct on that occasion, saying: "It has been pleasing to see referees this season use more judgment on handball incidents rather than award a penalty every time the ball hits an arm."
