Paul Pogba was like the 'pied piper' - former Manchester United youth coach

Paul Pogba was like the "pied piper" during his time with the Manchester United youth team, his former coach Paul McGuinness has told The Times.

Pogba, who left United for Juventus in 2012 and returned this summer for a world-record £89.3 million fee, is due to make his first appearance for the club since his return when Jose Mourinho's side host Southampton on Friday night.

Mourinho told MUTV that Pogba has "adapted really easily" on his return "because he knows the club, knows everybody," and former United youth-team coach McGuiness, who left Old Trafford earlier this year, has talked about the influence the Frenchman had on his young teammates during his first stint.

Referring to 13-a-side "cage" matches at the club's Carrington training ground, McGuiness said: "We'd mix the age groups so he would be 16 playing against 18-year-olds and some younger players, like Marcus Rashford and Adnan Januzaj.

"He would nutmeg players, pull off tricks and flicks. They would all try to copy him, he was like the Pied Piper. They were all mates. It was like they were a band of brothers."

Pogba first arrived at Old Trafford from Le Havre in 2009 and McGuiness, the son of former United player and manager Wilf, was instantly impressed.

He said: "The first time I saw him, all 6-foot-3 of him, I thought, 'Wow, he looks the part.' I quickly saw he had got the skills as well as the physique. He had quick footwork, great ball skills, timing, the ability to drop his shoulder and he had a lot of confidence, too."
