Manchester United's Wayne Rooney 'needs to settle' - Gary Neville

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney "needs stability" in a position that suits him, according to former Old Trafford defender Gary Neville.

Rooney, 30, was used as a midfielder by former United boss Louis van Gaal last season, and he scored eight goals in 28 Premier League appearances.

New Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho, however, has said he does not plan to use him in that role, and on Sunday the England international supported striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, scoring in a 3-1 victory at Bournemouth.

Neville, who worked with Rooney with England at Euro 2016, said on Sky Sports: "I don't think the transition has happened fully yet. For England sometimes he played left of a three in midfield, sometimes even deeper.

"He needs stability, with a manager sticking with him for two or three years.

"He now needs to settle into that last phase of his career. He will continue to come deeper. But the four biggest chances and moments of the game against Bournemouth involved him."
