Jose Mourinho not a 'big shouter' so far as Man United boss - Rooney

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney says Jose Mourinho has not yet given the hairdryer treatment to the players, despite a disappointing 0-0 draw against Everton at Old Trafford, adding the new boss is not a "big shouter."

The game was a testimonial for Rooney after 12 years at United and he played 54 minutes before coming off, replaced by Marcus Rashford. Mourinho looked frustrated during the match as his team struggled to unlock the Everton defence.

Discussing Mourinho, Rooney told BT Sport: "He's not a real big shouter but he expects certain things from his players.

"He's got that aura about him and you know the message he wants to get across. At the minute, he's not throwing things, but you never know once the season starts.

"He's a competitor and he wants to win, whether it's a friendly like tonight or the Community Shield [against Leicester City] on Sunday."

The United captain felt that there were positives to take from the performance, though, and that the testimonial had been a "proud moment" for himself and his family.

Rooney told MUTV: "The game was important for us in terms of building fitness and trying to get some good things out of the game, which I thought we did.

"There are a lot of positives we can take, especially from the first half, and there are things we can work on, which I'm sure we will do with the manager."

Rooney also said he believes Manchester United's attacking prospects are good after his first run-out on home soil alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The United captain linked up well with Ibrahimovic, who was making his home debut, and the combinations with fellow forwards Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial were also promising.

Rooney told BT Sport: "I think tonight was a little step forward. A few of the lads felt a bit sharper. In the first half we opened them up at times and the rotation was there between players, little combinations.

"It was a night I was always going to remember and for me and the three children it was great."

Rooney is donating all proceeds from the fixture, which was attended by 58,597 fans, to charity.
