Manchester United's Wayne Rooney confirms testimonial for Aug. 3

Wayne Rooney's testimonial match has been confirmed as Manchester United against Everton on Aug. 3.

The 30-year-old's testimonial means that there is a home preseason game at Old Trafford for the first time in two years.

It will be the first chance for fans to see new manager Jose Mourinho in charge of his new-look team, which has already been bolstered by the signing of defender Eric Bailly, subject to a work permit.

The FA Cup, which United won this season, will also be on display. Rooney lifted that at Wembley, meaning that he has won all three major domestic trophies and the Champions League while playing for United, who he joined in summer 2004.

The chairman of Rooney's first club Everton, Bill Kenwright, described the striker as one of the sport's "great icons," adding that it was an easy decision to support his testimonial.

Kenwright said: "I couldn't be more proud today of the young man who I first saw as an extraordinary 13-year-old. I was thrilled for him last August when Goodison Park showed him its admiration as he ran on to the pitch for his first hero Duncan Ferguson's testimonial.

"It was one of the easiest decisions we have ever made at Everton in agreeing to support Wayne Rooney's testimonial."

Proceeds from the testimonial match will be distributed, through the newly-launched Wayne Rooney Foundation, to four chosen charities, with an aim of raising £5 million for disadvantaged and vulnerable children.
