Manchester United favourites for title under Jose Mourinho - Phil Neville

Jose Mourinho's arrival will turn Manchester United into Premier League title favourites next season, according to former defender Phil Neville.

Neville, who is leaving Valencia after a year of coaching in La Liga, says Mourinho can create the siege mentality that United need.

The Portuguese coach's arrival is yet to be confirmed, with image rights issues stalling the deal's completion, but his expected arrival would set up battles against the new Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

It will be a recreation of their rivalry from Spain when Mourinho's Real Madrid and Guardiola's Barcelona were bitter rivals.

Neville told reporters: "I think the Premier League will be a different dynamic this year -- it will be a war.

"I think, if you are going to war, you need the biggest weapons and your best artillery -- and that's Jose. He is the best at creating a siege mentality of us against the world and, under Sir Alex Ferguson, that was what United were always good at.

"United had to employ someone with the character, charisma and ability to take on Manchester City and Guardiola because he is one of the best as well.

"Then you have [Jurgen] Klopp at Liverpool, [Mauricio] Pochettino at Tottenham and [Antonio] Conte at Chelsea. United have probably employed the best manager in the world at getting success.

"It's a big summer for everyone but United have started the summer with a bang by getting Jose.

"That will make United title favourites now. You name Jose and it's a statement that says 'we want our title back.'"

United ended the last campaign in fifth place and Neville believes that the club should be "embarrassed" when they look at what Leicester City achieved by becoming champions on a far smaller budget.

Neville said: "I've been in Spain the past year and you see differently from the outside. I've seen a Premier League that, in terms of quality, has been quite poor. On paper, Leicester shouldn't win the Premier League. Arsenal, United, Chelsea and City should be embarrassed.

"With their wealth and quality they should be winning the title, so it's been a kick up the backside for those clubs."
