Luke Shaw ruled out of FA Cup final and Euro 2016 by Louis van Gaal

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw will not be fit in time for the FA Cup final, according to manager Louis van Gaal.

Shaw, 20, has been out with a broken leg since September and his manager had set him a target of featuring in the Cup final, which takes place on May 21 as United face Crystal Palace.

But those dreams have finally been dashed, with the former Southampton defender's double leg break proving too much for him to recover from.

"I have always said to Luke that he can play in the final, to keep his motivation high, but now I cannot say that anymore," Van Gaal said ahead of United's final Premier League game of the season against Bournemouth. "It is a pity but he cannot reach that level to play.

"He needs more time to play, but it keeps his motivation very high. It is still high and I have to give compliments to him because it is not easy to be away for such a long time.

"He is coming back, but he is coming back next season."

The news also effectively confirms Shaw's absence from England's squad for the summer's European Championship in France.

Adnan Januzaj is a new addition to United's injury list after suffering a knock in training.

Defender Matteo Darmian and versatile Ashley Young are also both ruled out of the game against Bournemouth on Sunday, but may be back in contention in time for the FA Cup final.
