Man United's Michael Carrick: FA Cup final doesn't mask poor league position

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick says the club cannot get carried away by reaching the FA Cup final and need to target being top of the Premier League again.

United reached the FA Cup final for the first time since 2007 after beating Everton 2-1 in Saturday's semifinal at Wembley. If they defeat Crystal Palace in next month's final then they will have won the trophy for the first time in 12 years.

However, Carrick, a Champions League winner with United, has seen better days and realises that the club have fallen short this season.

"I don't want to get carried away too much. Two weeks ago, everything was a disaster and this doesn't change the whole thing," he is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News.

"We know where we're at as a team and a club. We know we need to improve, of course we do. We need to be right at the top of the league again.

"That's not going to change over the next few weeks. That's something we have to build on, so we can't get carried away because we've had a good run of wins and a big one against Everton."

The midfielder said he is feeling the same frustration as the fans regarding United's barren spell.

The Red Devils have not won a trophy since the Premier League title win in 2013, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson then retiring immediately after.

"We've set the standard over so many years that everyone is used to United being successful and winning trophies," Carrick said. "As players, we're the same and it's desperately frustrating when it doesn't happen. But that's the challenge for everyone -- to get back on top -- and that's what we have to do."

Marouane Fellaini put United on the way to victory on Saturday, scoring the game's opening goal against his former club Everton.

The Belgium international is looking forward to next month's final but says United must focus on their remaining Premier League fixtures first.

"It was very tough for us but the spirit of the team was great and we deserved to win the game," Fellaini is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News. "Everton had nothing to lose so they pushed it for 25 minutes and it was tough for us. But we created a lot of chances in the second half as well, so we deserved to win.

"When you play in big games, there is a lot of motivation and we have to be motivated in the final too. Everyone is looking forward to it but now we have to focus on the league as well. We want to finish in the top four and look forward to the final."
