Wayne Rooney will play "more minutes" when Manchester United face Aston Villa on Saturday, manager Louis van Gaal has said.
Rooney made his comeback as a late substitute in the FA Cup quarterfinal replay win over West Ham on Wednesday after more than two months out with a knee injury.
Marcus Rashford has impressed during his absence, leaving Van Gaal with a dilemma over who plays in attack, and United midfielder Michael Carrick said he believed the striker's emergence was no flash in the pan.
The Dutchman told MUTV: "He [Rooney] always wants to play.
"Yes, I think he shall receive more minutes, but it's always dependent on the game. You cannot say in advance that I give you 20 minutes or something like that. When it's possible, I shall do that because we need Wayne in the team."
However, Van Gaal said he did not expect midfielder Bastian Schweinstieger to play again this season - although he added that the Germany captain could still feature at Euro 2016.
"I don't think Schweinsteiger shall play this season -- I think, next season, he is prepared," he added.
"Maybe he is prepared for the European Championship. I cannot predict. It is possible."
Left-back Luke Shaw is "doing great" as he continues his recovery from a broken leg, while midfielder Ander Herrara limped off against West Ham with the severity of his injury not yet clear.
