Man United's Wayne Rooney set for bench role vs. West Ham - reports

Wayne Rooney is set to be on the substitutes' bench for Manchester United's FA Cup tie with West Ham United on Wednesday, according to British newspaper reports.

Rooney, 30, has not played for United since Feb. 13 after picking up a knee injury but the striker did play an hour on Monday for the club's under-21 side.

The Red Devils travel to West Ham in their FA Cup quarterfinal replay and it is reported in The Sun, The Times and the Daily Telegraph that Rooney will be on the bench for the match.

At his prematch news conference, Slaven Bilic said he is hoping Rooney does not make his long-awaited comeback after labelling the striker the best England player of his era.

Louis van Gaal's men are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday that dented their top-four hopes.

Defender Phil Jones said: "We have to go to West Ham, play well and beat them. It has been a difficult season."

He added: "It's another massive game on Wednesday. It's probably a defining moment in our season so we need to make sure we win that game and that we're at Wembley."

Of the result at White Hart Lane, where United let in three goals in six minutes, Jones said: "The players are gutted with the result and the way we conceded so quickly."
