Luke Shaw set for Man Utd training; Wayne Rooney to play in U21 game

Manchester United left back Luke Shaw will be back out on the training pitch from Monday after having been out since September.

Shaw suffered a double fracture of his right leg during United's defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League after a lunge by Hector Moreno. He has undergone a lengthy rehabilitation process but travelled to Dubai during the international break.

A fortnight ago, United manager Louis van Gaal set Shaw the target of returning and playing in the FA Cup final but the manager admitted that is unrealistic now.

Van Gaal said: "Luke shall start the first training sessions on the pitch next week. Now he can train with his body weight on the pitch. But it is very difficult to play in the final of the FA Cup [on May 21]."

The Dutchman also said striker Wayne Rooney is set to be used in a United under-21s game before featuring for the first team.

The U21s' next fixtures are home matches against Chelsea on April 4 and Newcastle United on April 9, followed by an away game at Tottenham on April 18.

Van Gaal told MUTV: "He's doing great. Today he has trained on a lower level, with a little bit of skill training, so with the ball. It's going very good with him."

Ander Herrera and Ashley Young are both close to recovering fitness from their groin injuries.
