Wayne Rooney 'not even close' to returning for Man United - Van Gaal

Wayne Rooney capped a memorable March in 2014 with a spectacular brace at West Ham.
Wayne Rooney is not about to make a quick recovery to help Manchester Untied.

Wayne Rooney is "not even close" to returning for Manchester United, manager Louis van Gaal says.

United have been without their captain since he suffered a knee injury in February and was ruled out for two months.

Van Gaal said there has been no positive progress made to be able to shorten his recovery plan.

"Wayne still has weeks to go. He is not even close. I cannot say how many weeks, as you never know," Van Gaal said.

"It is a conservative healing what we are doing with the brace, not an operation or something like that."

Rooney has been ruled out of England's friendlies against Germany and Netherlands in March, but a further setback would put his hopes of playing at Euro 2016 this summer in jeopardy as well.

England boss Roy Hodgson has already said he will keep a spot open for Rooney if he is fit.
