Man United's Antonio Valencia and Bastian Schweinsteiger near returns

Antonio Valencia could return to the squad for Manchester United's Europa League round-of-16 match at Liverpool on Thursday, manager Louis van Gaal has said.

Valencia, 30, has not played since coming off with a foot injury in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Oct. 25. He has undergone surgery and returned to training a fortnight ago.

Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has also returned to training and is nearing full fitness after missing 13 matches.

The Germany captain, 31, suffered a knee injury during the FA Cup tie against Sheffield United on Jan. 9.

Van Gaal said: "Valencia is coming back and Schweinsteiger is coming back.

"I think a lot of players shall come back in month of March. When they come back it's not so easy to decide if they can cope with the rhythm of the matches, though.

"Bastian has had only one training session with us. Valencia has had a week so he is closer to being on the bench, for example, but not to play [start] a match -- that's different."

Jesse Lingard will be suspended against Liverpool after being booked for simulation against FC Midtjylland, but Juan Mata is available.
