Bastian Schweinsteiger to miss Manchester United's trip to Newcastle

Manchester United will be without the injured Bastian Schweinsteiger when they face Newcastle United on Tuesday.

Schweinsteiger, 31, suffered a knee problem in the closing minutes of Saturday's 1-0 win over Sheffield United in the FA Cup.

And although he completed the game, the Germany captain, who has started United's last three matches, is not able to feature at St James' Park as United look to record a third successive win.

"Bastian is injured, that we know," manager Louis van Gaal told MUTV. "We have seen that because he could not move."

It means Michael Carrick could be set for a recall alongside Morgan Schneiderlin in the centre of midfield, although Marouane Fellaini offers another option.

Defenders Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia are long-term absentees, while Phil Jones is expected to miss out again.

Ashley Young was omitted against Sheffield United because Van Gaal feared he would be injured and the Dutchman is waiting to see if other players need to be rested after the busy Christmas and New Year fixture list.

"It is so close to the match," he explained. "We have to recover. Yesterday [Sunday] we recovered but also we have to see if the players are still overloaded or not. Until this moment, the players have not arrived so we have to wait and see.

"After I know all the data, I can line up. That is why it is always difficult in a period when we have to play a lot of matches. You have to wait to see how the players are recovering of the load in the match."
