Wayne Rooney becomes second top scorer in Premier League history

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney scored his 188th Premier League goal in the 2-1 win against Swansea, overtaking Andy Cole for the second-most in Premier League history.

Rooney, 30, had only netted twice in 16 games before Saturday but is now only behind Alan Shearer in the goals tally after a neat backheel finish.

PREMIER LEAGUE TOP SCORERS

1. Alan Shearer (260) - Newcastle and Blackburn
2. Wayne Rooney (188) - Everton and Man Utd
3. Andrew Cole (187) - Newcastle, Man Utd, Man City, Fulham, Blackburn, Portsmouth
4= Thierry Henry (175) - Arsenal
4= Frank Lampard (175) - West Ham, Chelsea and Man City

The England captain broke the international scoring record earlier this year and his goal this weekend was also his 238th goal for Manchester United, which makes him the club's second highest scorer of all-time behind Sir Bobby Charlton's 249.

Van Gaal revealed after the game: "I'm very pleased for Wayne Rooney and I'm very happy with the performance." And his teammates also paid tribute to the feat.

Even Cole had some praise for the striker.

But it could be a while before he catches Alan Shearer.

Rooney is still 72 adrift of first-placed Shearer, who is on 260 -- Rooney's goals have come in 423 appearances; Shearer's total was from 441 games.
