Louis van Gaal has Manchester United players' backing - Wayne Rooney

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has said the players are behind manager Louis van Gaal.

Van Gaal has come under pressure after a third loss in a row for United against Norwich, while they are without a win in all competitions since Nov. 21.

On Wednesday, Van Gaal stormed out of a news conference after blaming the media for stories that he is on the brink of losing his job.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ ahead of the Boxing Day game at Stoke, Rooney said: "You have a lot of people talking about things they believe are happening but in reality a lot of people who are writing that stuff don't actually know what's happening.

"We are working hard, we are fighting with the manager to try and get the results and turn this season around."

Rooney also said confidence in the camp is low with the fifth-placed club nine points adrift of leaders Leicester.

"We haven't won games in the last few weeks so it's normal confidence will be a bit lower," the England international said.

"We need to try to get it back because we've got some tough games coming up and need to be at our best to win them."

United have back-to-back home games against Chelsea and Swansea following their meeting with Stoke.
